The floating clouds blanket the entire town, and the slight chill of early winter stirs the soul during Sa Pa’s cloud hunting season.

When it comes to cloud hunting, travelers often think of trekking routes like Lảo Thẩn, Tà Chì Nhù, Lùng Cúng, or Pu Ta Leng. However, right in Sa Pa town, an extraordinary cloud-hunting season awaits.

November Marks the Beginning of Sa Pa’s Cloud Hunting Season

Nestled halfway up the majestic Hoang Lien Son Mountain range, the misty town of Sa Pa has been recognized by Times Travel as one of the world's top 50 most beautiful destinations in 2024.

Sa Pa leaves a lasting impression on visitors with its golden terraced rice fields in September, the rich cultural identity of local ethnic groups, the grandeur of the Northwest mountains, and, of course, the breathtaking cloud season at the year's end.

The cloud-hunting season in Sa Pa begins around October and lasts until April of the following year. Billowing clouds gently drape over mountainsides and villages, making the already picturesque town even more tender and captivating.

Unlike other destinations requiring challenging treks to catch clouds, in Sa Pa, you can wake up to find the clouds right outside your window.

During this period, Sa Pa enjoys mild weather with temperatures ranging from 14–20°C, ideal for the formation of beautiful cloud layers. The gentler the wind, the thicker and more stunning the clouds.

The best times to hunt clouds are during sunrise and sunset when soft sunlight dances on the cotton-candy-like clouds.

Best Cloud-Hunting Spots in Sa Pa

At an altitude of over 1,600m above sea level, Sa Pa offers many convenient spots for cloud hunting. Travelers can simply ride a motorbike or take a cable car to destinations like Fansipan Peak, Ham Rong Mountain, O Quy Ho Pass, or Sau Chua Village.

Among these, Fansipan Peak—the “Roof of Indochina”—is the most beloved cloud-hunting spot.

From the summit, one side offers a panoramic view of Sa Pa town, while the other reveals the towering Hoang Lien Son mountain range stretching to the horizon.

If you have the chance to stay overnight on Fansipan, the sea of clouds that awaits at dawn is a scene you'll never forget.

At 3,143m above sea level, the sun begins to rise at 6 a.m., with the eastern horizon gradually glowing in shimmering golden hues.

A fairytale land unfolds before your eyes with white clouds in every direction and golden sunlight spilling over the late autumn and early winter skies. Distant peaks rise above the cloud sea, creating a breathtakingly magical panorama.
