The New York Times, one of the world’s most influential and widely shared media outlets, has officially released its annual list “52 Places to Go in 2026.” Notably, Vietnam has been recognized as a rising “tourism powerhouse” in Southeast Asia, securing the 34th position on the prestigious list.

On January 5, the U.S.-based newspaper published its much-anticipated annual travel rankings. This year’s selection places a strong emphasis on ecological conservation, sustainable tourism, and destinations marking important historical milestones.

Topping the list are historic sites across the United States, highlighted in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding. They are followed by Warsaw, Poland, praised as a symbol of post-war resilience, and Bangkok, Thailand, recognized for its ambitious urban green initiatives.

Vietnam stands out at number 34, alongside globally renowned destinations such as Warsaw, Bangkok, and Revolutionary America. According to the newspaper, Vietnam’s inclusion is not solely attributed to its natural beauty, but also to its remarkable progress in enhancing international tourism infrastructure, signaling the dawn of a new era for travelers visiting the country.

Described as an emerging tourism force in Southeast Asia, Vietnam continues to captivate millions of visitors each year with its celebrated culinary culture, breathtaking landscapes ranging from towering mountains to lush tropical forests, and a rich history dating back to the 7th century BCE.

However, the publication emphasizes that 2026 marks a pivotal turning point due to Vietnam’s aggressive investments in tourism infrastructure. The first phase of Long Thanh International Airport is expected to be completed by June 2026. Once fully operational, it is projected to become the country’s largest aviation hub, capable of handling up to 100 million passengers annually.

In addition, several world-class luxury hotels are scheduled to open in Vietnam in 2026, including Park Hyatt Phu Quoc, Four Seasons Hanoi, and Nobu Da Nang, further elevating the country’s appeal to high-end international travelers.

The newspaper also notes that the Vietnamese government has taken significant steps to facilitate inbound tourism by expanding and extending visa exemption policies for citizens of multiple countries.
