In late January, Visit Indochina welcomed a group of Philippine Catholic pilgrims on a spiritual journey to some of Vietnam’s most historic Catholic centers, spanning Hanoi, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, and Ha Long Bay — regions often regarded as the cradle of Catholicism in Northern Vietnam.

Among Southeast Asian nations, Vietnam stands out as a multi-religious country rich in cultural diversity, with Catholicism representing one of its largest religious communities. At the same time, Vietnam is increasingly emerging as a new pilgrimage destination for Catholic groups from the Philippines, where over 80% of the population practices Catholicism.

Traditionally, Philippine pilgrimage groups have focused on well-established destinations such as Europe, Thailand, or South Korea. However, rising costs, lengthy itineraries, and relatively standardized programs have prompted many groups to seek closer, more cost-effective destinations that still offer religious depth and meaningful cultural engagement. Northern Vietnam has proven to be well-positioned to meet these evolving demands.

During the Hanoi – Ha Nam – Nam Dinh – Ha Long Bay pilgrimage tour, Visit Indochina facilitated the celebration of Holy Mass at seven major churches and prominent basilicas across Northern Vietnam.

In Hanoi, the group visited St. Joseph’s Cathedral and Cua Bac Church, two iconic Catholic landmarks showcasing Western architectural styles set within an Eastern urban landscape.

In Ha Nam and Nam Dinh provinces, pilgrims journeyed to So Kien Basilica, Phu Nhai Basilica, and several large parishes — long recognized as major Catholic centers in Northern Vietnam, deeply connected to centuries of missionary history.

Compared to traditional pilgrimage destinations in the region, Catholic churches in Northern Vietnam offer a distinctive character, blending European Gothic architecture with rural village settings and local religious life. This unique combination has been highly appreciated by Philippine pilgrims seeking new yet solemn pilgrimage experiences.

Beyond religious activities, the itinerary was designed in line with modern pilgrimage trends, combining spirituality with cultural and nature-based experiences. Highlights included a Ha Long Bay cruise, overnight stays aboard a luxury vessel, exploration of Viet Hai village and natural caves, before concluding in Hanoi with visits to Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter.

According to tourism authorities, the number of Philippine visitors to Vietnam increased by over 30% in 2024, placing the Philippines among the fastest-growing source markets in Southeast Asia. Specifically, religious and pilgrimage tourism in Northern Vietnam has recorded an annual growth rate of 15–20%, signaling strong potential for Vietnam to position itself as a new regional pilgrimage hub alongside traditional destinations.
