A Philippine pilgrimage delegation has recently completed the “Hanoi - Sapa Lenten Pilgrimage Journey” in Northern Vietnam, combining sightseeing with religious activities during the Lent season of Catholic followers.

The Philippines is one of the countries with a high proportion of Catholic Christians. Each year, following the Lunar New Year period, Lent begins according to Christian beliefs.

To contemplate the mystery of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection, Catholics often organize pilgrimage trips to religious centers to seek prayers. Vietnam has become a preferred destination for many Philippine pilgrimage Vietnam groups.

The delegation arriving in Hanoi was welcomed by Visit Indochina for a multi-day journey across Hanoi, Ha Nam, Sa Pa and Nam Dinh, focusing on long-established Catholic sites as part of the Lenten pilgrimage Vietnam program.

In Hanoi, the group attended private masses at St. Joseph’s Cathedral and Cua Bac Church. These are iconic churches located in the city center and regularly host international visitors.

Leaving Hanoi, the delegation traveled to Ha Nam, visiting and praying at So Kien Basilica, one of the oldest churches in Northern Vietnam, known for its spacious setting and limited impact from mass tourism.

In Sa Pa, the group visited the Stone Church, a French-era structure located in the town center. In late spring, Sa Pa’s cool weather, with occasional early morning fog, creates a quiet atmosphere suitable for reflection during the Lenten pilgrimage.

The final stop in Nam Dinh brought the delegation to Kien Lao Church and Phu Nhai Basilica, considered one of the largest Catholic centers in Northern Vietnam, with a high density of parishes and a long-standing Catholic community.

Pilgrimage tours organized by Visit Indochina are typically customized, prioritizing time for prayer, retreat and private mass arrangements. Lent is a peak period for demand, especially from markets with large Catholic populations such as the Philippines.

In recent years, the structure of international visitors to Vietnam has shifted. Beyond leisure tourism, specialized segments such as pilgrimage tourism, cultural travel and educational tours are growing. Southeast Asia remains a stable and nearby market, with short stays and reasonable costs.

Northern Vietnam, with its historic churches, diverse landscapes and seasonal climate, is considered suitable for pilgrimage tourism combined with sightseeing, particularly in late spring before the peak summer heat.

Visit Indochina maintains an extensive partner network across Southeast Asia, India and beyond, along with a team experienced in local culture and destinations to organize Catholic pilgrimage tours for international travelers.
